Save-the-date cards have increased in popularity in the last decade or so. You could be unfamiliar with what they are, how they work, or why you might need them. We’ve compiled some frequently asked questions to help guide you through the save-the-date process.
Save-the-date cards aren’t wedding invitations. They’re small (or big!) cards you send to your friends and family to let them know you're planning a wedding and the date it’s going to be. Save-the-date cards are a simple way to ask your guests to keep your special day free in their calendars. After all, you wouldn’t want anyone to miss out!
Sending save-the-dates is a great way to spread the word about your wedding to anyone who hasn’t heard yet. But the main reason is to make sure as many of your loved ones as possible can make it. Imagine having gone through the trouble of extensive wedding planning to find that the majority of your guests can’t make it because they’re on holiday or working! Give your family and friends an opportunity to organise themselves. If they’re coming from abroad, for instance, they’ll want to book flights well in advance. Be accommodating and don’t wait until the last minute.
Sooner rather than later! Some couples even send their save-the-dates out two years in advance. Your guests need sufficient notice to make arrangements — from pets to childcare. At a bare minimum, send out save-the-date cards at least six to eight months before your wedding. If you can send the cards out even a year or more in advance, this is ideal so that people can book their holidays and other plans around your wedding — not at the same time.
Send out your save-the-dates first, followed by your formal wedding invitations at a later date. We recommend sending out your wedding invitations 4-9 months before your big day as a reminder to your guests after you’ve sent out your save-the-date cards.
Keep it simple. Include your name and your partner’s and the date your wedding is set to be. If you can also add an approximate location, this will help guests plan ahead. It’s a good idea to add a line like “formal invitation to follow” so guests won’t start querying you for missing information. If your guests have little ones, it’s incredibly helpful for them to know whether their children are allowed to come. Your save-the-date cards are the basics; any details you’ve forgotten or haven’t been finalised yet can be sent out in your wedding invitation later.
